POHLAD FAMILY FOUNDATION AWARDS $1.67 MILLION IN GRANTS
Foundation also receives $20 million for future grants
MINNEAPOLIS – January 31, 2003 — The Carl and Eloise Pohlad Family Foundation recently announced 70 grants totaling more than $1.67 million that were approved from April-December 2002. During 2002, the Foundation was also the recipient of funds – a $20 million gift from Carl and Eloise Pohlad – that will support future grantmaking to Twin Cities and other selected nonprofit organizations.
Approved grants include education support for students. A $483,000 grant will provide college scholarships for 42 Twin Cities-area high school students in each of the next four years. The Scholarship program, administered by the Horatio Alger Association, recently selected the first scholars – students who exhibit integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. The Minneapolis Foundation received a $50,000 grant to support its Destination 2010 program for select Minneapolis Public School students. A $10,000 grant to Admission Possible will provide college preparation and application services to participating Minneapolis and St. Paul school district high school students.
Several health care organizations received capital and program grants totaling more than $210,000. The largest grant, $150,000 to the Children’s Hospital Foundation, will support expansion of the neo-natal intensive care unit at the Minneapolis campus, while the Eating Disorders program at Methodist Hospital received a grant to improve patient transportation to needed services. Grants to the Alzheimers Association and Community University Health Clinic of the Minnesota Medical Foundation will support direct services provided to families and children in need.
Three-year operating grants, totaling more than $259,000 were also approved for eleven large Twin Cities cultural and civic organizations. Children’s Theatre Company, Minnesota Children’s Museum and Twin Cities Public Television are among the organizations selected.
To continue its grantmaking, Carl and Eloise Pohlad also made a $20 million gift to the foundation. Together with their sons, Mr. and Mrs. Pohlad will complete a new plan for future grantmaking during the first half of 2003.
The Carl and Eloise Pohlad Family Foundation is a private family foundation. Since 1999, the Foundation has approved more than $12.5 million in grants. The Foundation provides grant support through its own initiatives that support families and children and build stronger communities, by participating in major community projects, or directing support to organizations of interest and importance to family members.
